In the shadow of COVID-19, Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day, the Dallas Cowboys and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas have come together to support the organizations and individuals who need help the most. On Tuesday, May 5, 2020, this collaborative will host an emergency response day of giving, North Texas Giving Tuesday Now, to encourage donor support for nonprofit organizations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.Dallas’ homeless response system is already reeling, and a tsunami of need may be just around the corner. “Nearly a third of U.S. apartment renters didn’t pay any of their April rent during the first week of the month,” according to the Wall Street Journal. This means that MDHA, which has begun to turn the tide in the fight to end homelessness, is already and will continue to be severely tested in the days to come.
Before COVID-19 we could imagine that the plight of our homeless brothers and sisters wouldn’t affect any of us, directly. With COVID-19, it is. Keeping our homeless brothers and sisters in shelters and on the streets, unable to practice social distancing, puts us all at risk. COVID-19 is showing us that a home is more than four walls and a roof; a home is healthcare, public safety, family, community. We must act now to make this a reality for everyone, and not only prevent new people from falling into homelessness, but end homelessness in this, our home, Dallas and Collin Counties.
North Texas Giving Tuesday Now will take place on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, from 6am to midnight. Early giving will begin on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, and early gifts will be processed in real time.
